Cathay Pacific: The Fun Is Back!

Cathay Pacific: The Fun Is Back!

I just caught the Cathay Pacific television advertisement for the 2010 Hong Kong Sevens on local English-language TV channel Pearl TV. Cathay Pacific is, of course the national airline/carrier of Hong Kong and co-sponsor together with Credit Suisse of the BIGGEST Sevens on the IRB Sevens World Circuit.

The tag-line for Cathay’s 2010 tv advert is “The Fun Is Back” but with the Adelaide Sevens looming (in the way) a week before, at this stage of the season we should amend that to “The Fun Is (Almost) Back.”  For now.

Be that as it may, for any serious Hong Kong Sevens fan, now is the time to start preparing for Hong Kong’s un-official rugby week.

If you haven’t yet done so, put in that saved leave-days at the office to make sure you have a least 4-5 consecutive days come March 26-28, 2010. “But the Sevens is only THREE days” I hear you protest.

Hey, trust me, you’ll need 4-5 days.

Three days for the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens, one (or two) days before to get into the spirit by catching the GFI HKFC Tens over at the Football Club, maybe even the Cable & Wireless Worldwide HK Women’s Rugby Sevens (same venue) on the Friday and, most importantly… a day (again, or two) after March 28 to recuperate (aka sleep-it-off).

On the home-front Boys, now is the time to bank some extra time in the ‘good-house.’ You do not want to be sleeping on the sofa after HK Sevens.  Again, trust me… you’ll need that good-house time more. The boss can be worked with paperwork, but the Missus…neva!

Now is the time to be doing all those chores you’ve been putting off till ‘tomorrow.’ Arrive home with take-outs or a nice bunch of flowers (yes, you know by now: or two) or give her a totally un-expected full body rub (or more) until you’re dead on your knees or back (or whatever rocks her world). You’ll thank me after March 29.

Whether you take my advice or you have your own, do it now because, in the words of Cathay Pacific:

                                                                    The Fun Is Back!

See you on March 26-28 at the Hong Kong Stadium.

Insurance for women

Cathay Pacific is running a competition where you can enter a video to win some fan-tastic prizes like flights, event tickets and many more.  Simply go to their FaceBook page and enter your Sevens video.

Party-time: Joe Bananas, Wan Chai

Party-time: Joe Bananas, Wan Chai

Can you believe it, I’m actually sitting IN Joe Bananas on Sevens Sunday typing this!  Word is the Bokke will be making an appearance later, as they do almost every year.

The premier venue in Wan Chai during Sevens Week has got to be Joe Bananas.  Last year, the Springboks visited (and stayed laaaaaate!) after the Cup Final of the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens.  Right now, the place is packed with lots more revellers outside in the streets of Wan Chai.  A whole troupe of Fijian supporters are also tearing the dance-floor apart.

The venue has an ample dance-floor with the DJ’s spinning mostly classic rock, pop and the occassional reggae tune.

50 000 voices sing: Come on Eileen!

50 000 voices sing: Come on Eileen!

I’m watching the Sharks playing the Force on the desktop (JP Petersen just scored a wonderful try!), so from the laptop to you… another Hong Kong Sevens classic!

Again, I’ve copied the lyrics to the Dexy’s Midnight Runners classic.  I’ve even highlighted the ‘important lines’ for you to memorise just in case you’re NOT UP TO THE WHOLE SONG!

Everybody sing:

Poor old Johnny Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio, he moved a million hearts in mono.
Our mothers cried and sang along and who’d blame them.
Now you’re grown, so grown, now I must say more than ever.
Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye-Aye
and we can sing just like our fathers.

Come on Eileen,
I swear (well he means) At this moment you mean everything,
With you in that dress my thoughts I confess verge on dirty
Ah come on Eileen.

These people round here wear beaten down eyes
Sunk in smoke dried faces they’re so resigned to what their fate is,
But not us, no not us we are far too young and clever.
Remember Toora Loora Toora Loo-Rye-Aye
Eileen I’ll hum this tune forever.

Come on Eileen, I swear, well he means
Ah come on let’s take off everything,
That pretty red dress Eileen (Tell him yes)
Ah come on let’s, ah come on Eileen, please.

Nice.

Say thank you Mike.

HK Sevens 101: Hey Baby!

HK Sevens 101: Hey Baby!

I was going to add the lyrics to this other HK Sevens anthem, but all you have to know is:

Hey! Hey! Baby!

Ooh! Ah!

I wanna know, if you’d be my girl!

Practice time…. everybody in the house:

HK Sevens 101: Sweet Caroline

HK Sevens 101: Sweet Caroline

Don’t ever say the BlitzBokke.com is NOT usefull!  Here are the words to, as well as a video of a Hong Kong Sevens anthem: Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline.  Do youself a favour, click play on the YouTube video, then follow the lyrics below.  Don’t look and sound like a doos  on the South Stand next week… learn it NOW!

Where it began
I cant begin to knowin
But then I know its growin strong

Was in the spring
And spring became the summer
Whod have believed youd come along

Hands, touchin hands
Reachin out
Touchin me
Touchin you

Sweet caroline
Good times never seemed so good
Ive been inclined
To believe they never would

But now i
Look at the night
And it dont seem so lonely
We fill it up with only two
And when I hurt
Hurtin runs off my shoulders
How can I hurt when Im with you

Warm, touchin warm
Reachin out
Touchin me
Touchin me

Sweet caroline
Good times never seemed so good
Ive been inclined
To believe they never would
Oh, no, no

Sweet caroline
Good times never seemed so good
Ive been inclined
I believed they never could
Sweet caroline

Let the good times roll, and the beer flow!  Now for the Hong Kong Stadium version:

Party time: Lan Kwai Fong!

Party time: Lan Kwai Fong!

Lan Kwai Fong (say it as you read it) is arguably THE party district of the Hong Kong Sevens.  There is even a free shuttle bus from the Hong Kong Stadium to LKF after the day’s play.  However, you’ll probably want to head to your hotel room first to freshen up after a heady day of Sevens action! (especially if you’ve been to the infamous South Stand!)

You may as well learn the lyrics to “Sweet Caroline” while you watch this action from the South Stand:

In a nutshell, to get to LKF, you can take a taxi (just say Lan Kwai Fong or if you want to impress the driver Lan Kwai Fong m’goi which is Lan Kwai Fong please).  You can also take the MTR (underground train) and get off at Central Station.  Or take the trolley (tram) and get off at the Armani stop in Central.  In any case, JUST follow the noisy, rugby-jersey clad crowd!

LKF is a cobbled L-shaped street abbutted by D’Arguilar street.  On any other night BUT Sevens Weekend amongst others, vehicular traffic is allowed (mostly taxis and delivery trucks).  However, on any party-night revellers occupy the ENTIRE district, partying, dancing (yes… kots-ing) and basically taking over the streets:

If you’re hungry, what can I say, there are numerous fast-food establishments.  My favourite being Ebenezer’s for curries, chips, swarma’s, etc.  There are also the obligatory Irish pubs, dance clubs, Indian restaurants (mostly on higher floors but touts all over) and yes 7-11 for CHEAP beers.

Be that as it may…. Lan Kwai Fong IS THE PLACE TO BE over Sevens weekend.

Eish! Where to go?

Eish! Where to go?

As an introduction to this section on BlitzBokke.com here are my suggestions on where to go when you visit the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens this year (or any other Sevens year for that matter).  Given that you’re probably in Hong Kong for the duration of the Sevens (4-5 days over Sevens weekend) there are just 2 areas of interest (party, socialise, drinking, dancing) that you should do after the day’s rugby.

(1) Lan Kwai Fong

(2) Wan Chai

Obviously, all bars and other entertainment venues all over the SAR (Special Admin. Region) of whci there are thousands will have some kind of Sevens event happening, but given time and other constraints, the 2 areas mentioned above will be the focus-areas over Sevens weekend.  Hong Kong has an excellent FREE weekly newspaper called HK that will list all the events and parties planned over the weekend so when you land at Chek Lap Kok (our famous, award-winning airport on Lantau Island) do yourself a favour and get your hands on one.  Then of course, there is also the very informative BC magazine. Both of these publications should be IN your bag/backpack over Sevens weekend!

I’m going to comment on Lan Kwai Fong and Wan Chai in the following posts so stay tuned…
