Hot-Cold day for SA Sevens Academy in Punta del Este

The SA Rugby Sevens Academy will face Ireland in the quarterfinals of the Punta del Este 7s tournament in Uruguay after finishing second in pool A of the tournament.

Kick-off time is 00h58 on Monday morning (SA time).

South Africa scored good wins over Paraguay (45 – 0) and Germany (45 – 0) but lost to Chile (19 – 10) to finish second in their pool on Saturday.

The Punta del Este 7s knockout rounds draw.

The SA Rugby Sevens Academy has met Ireland in their last two tournaments, the Oktoberfest Sevens in Munich and the Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens International Invitational, winning on both occasions, but will need to be at their best to make it three in a row.

They have lost hard-working forward, JC Pretorius, who dislocated his shoulder and was ruled out of play on Sunday.

Ireland, who now boast former Blitzbokke management member, Allan Temple-Jones, as their strength and conditioning coach, has already qualified for the Rugby World Cup Sevens, to be played in San Francisco in July.

The other quarterfinals will be between Chile and Germany; Uruguay and Argentina and Brazil and France.

Tournament-within-a-tournament

The is Punta del Este 7s, together with next weekend’s Vina Sevens, is part of the SudAmerica7s Series.

The two-part Series is of significance only for theĀ five South American teams Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Paraguay & Brasil as the top team after next weekend will represent the region at the Sevens World Cup in San Francisco in July.

Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Paraguay & Brasil will battle it out to represent the region at the RWC7s.
