Despite advancing all the way to the Cup Final in Hong Kong, the Springbok Sevens team was fortunate to lose only Selvyn Davids due to injury.
Some of the BlitzBokke’s key players who are already on the injury list include Rosko Speckman, Kyle Brown, Stephan Dippenaar, Justin Geduld and Carel du Preez. Kwagga Smith and Seabelo Senatla are also out of contention as they are playing Vodacom Super Rugby.
Coach Neil Powell has called up Sandile Ngcobo to replace Davids for this weekend’s HSBC Singapore Sevens.
Davids (pictured below) was ruled out of the eighth tournament in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, to be played at the Singapore National Stadium on 15 and 16 April, due to an ankle injury sustained in Hong Kong.
Although Davids, who made his debut in Hong Kong in the sweeper role, was replaced by the traveling reserve, Ryan Oosthuizen, for the Cup Final, Powell has opted for another back-line player as a replacement.
“It is a pity that Selvyn picked up an injury as he showed good touches in Hong Kong, but injuries are part of rugby, something we are pretty aware of at the moment,” Powell said.
“We are replacing a backline player with another one, so Sandile was the obvious call,” explained Powell.
“He also joined us in Vancouver following the injury to Stephan Dippenaar, so is no stranger to our system. Ryan will remain the back-up, but as he saw in Hong Kong, could be called upon at any time.”
The Springbok Sevens team has been drawn in Pool B and will face England, France, and Japan.
South Africa’s fixtures, in SA time, for the HSBC Singapore 7s are:
Match04 – 06:06 – South Africa vs Japan
Match12 – 09:06 – South Africa vs France
Match20 – 13:02 – South Africa vs England
