While most of the regular Sevens professionals are on an end-of-season break, some of the top players have travelled to Sri Lanka for this weekend’s Carlton Super Sevens.
Sri Lanka’s biggest rugby tournament is presented by Tharunyata Hetak, Carlton Sports Club together with the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union. The tournament will be stretched over the following two weekends, in Kandy on 26th and 27th May and in Colombo on 2nd and 3rd June.
The four-year old Carlton Super Sevens was last year converted into a franchise-based format with 10 franchises made up of 9 provincial teams as well as 1 combined team, including:
•Jaffna Challengers
•Western Warriors
•North Western Blacks
•Eastern Eagles
•Sabaragamuwa Stallions
•Uva Vipers
•North Central Typhoons
•Southern Sharks
•Central Kings
•Northern Gladiators
Local teams, international flavor
Each of the franchises feature predominently local players; however they each employ a foreign coach and are further strenghtened by a number of top, international Sevens campaigners.
The Northern Gladiators has a big South African-flavour with coach Neil Powell and Springbok players Renfred Dazel, MJ Mentz and Deon Helberg on the playing staff.
Other internationals who will be in action in Sri Lanka include:
Frank Halai, Joe Weber, DJ Forbes, Zar Lawrence, Tomasi Cama, Tim Mikkelson, Waisake Naholo (all New Zealand)
Dan Norton, Mat Turner, Simon Hunt, Sam Edgerly, Chris Brightwell (England)
Shalom Suniula, Zach Test (USA)
Osea Kolinisau, Joeli Lutomailagi, Metuisela Talebula, Setefanu Cacaunivula, Wasoni Roko, Lote Raikabula (Fiji)
Rupeni Levase (Samoa)
