The traditional Street Parade through the host-city of Wellington kicked off the 2012 Hertz Sevens this morning (SA time).

While a cool, wet day was expected, judging from the players’ shades, the Wellington weather played along just fine.

As always the teams were lead through downtown Wellington by their respective cheerleaders who were chosen by way of a competition a few weeks ago. It should come as no surprise that the team selected to cheer-on the Blitzbokke at the ‘Cake Tin’ this weekend is called ‘Team Cecil Afrika.’ Have a look at them on the official tournament website.

More than simply a kick-off event, according to Tournament General Manager Steve Walters, the Street Parade is also ‘a chance for the people of Wellington to embrace the teams.”

The weekend weather forecast for Wellington looks promising so here’s hoping for some champagne Sevens from the Westpac Stadium!  South Africa last won in New Zealand back in 2002 when coach Paul Treu was playing for that Cup-winning side. With the hard-yards and preparation put in by our Boys over the last two months, this weekend could see them knock Gordon Tietjens’ side off their perch.

Here’s some IRB footage from last year’s Parade… see if you can spot Springbok fan Jacqui Sive strutting her stuff around 0:13 into the clip!
