It was moustaches galore as the 2011/12 HSBC Sevens World Series kicked off at the Gold Coast.
Many players saw the opening tournament of the season as an opportunity to show off their month-long Movember efforts before the Series moves on to Dubai in December. Movember, a blend of the slang word “mo” for moustache and “November” comes to an end on Wednesday, two days before the Dubai Sevens.
Ironically the ‘Movember‘ initiative was conceived in 1999 in Brisbane, a former Australian Sevens host, to highlight the fight against testicular cancer.
It was clear from the opening match at Skilled Park on Friday that quite a number of players, especially those in the French side, had been carefully (some not so carefully!) cultivating ‘taches of note.
However, one of the talking points this past weekend centered around New Zealand skipper DJ Forbes‘ ‘traditional’ Day1 bushy beard. As is his habit, Forbes grows his beard until Day 1 of the tournament, only to appear clean-shaven on Finals day. The question this time around was, will he or won’t he? Prompted by commentator Willy Lose about his tradition, Forbes told of how his teammates were trying to get him to at least keep the ‘tache in support of Movember.
The Kiwi did not disappoint and turned up yesterday with this epic effort:
In the Springbok Sevens camp, Boom Prinsloo added his considerable sideburns to his ‘tache to produce one of the best Movember entries of the tournament. Our very own Paul Delport showed that he is right up there when it comes to the bestest tache in town. I’m sure you will agree that Pauly’s snor (Afrikaans for moustache) will give even Borat a run for his money.
