One of the first things I do in the mornings is read the South African online newspapers, including Die Burger. Opening up the sports-section of this morning’s edition had me do a double take. In fact a couple of re-takes.
Die Burger’s Afrikaans-language humorous caption read: ‘Doekies wil hul dra. Broekie-skeur Bokke’ Die Blitsbokke gaan binnekort hul aanslag om weer die beste sewes-rugbyspan ter wêreld te word in dié volksvreemde uitrustings begin.
The picture shows Springbok Sevens players Robert Ebersohn, Renfred Dazel, Boom Prinsloo, Chris Dry and Bernado Botha in the team’s Canterbury SA-sponsored playing strip for the 2011/12 HSBC sevens World Series. The new kit will debut at the Gold Coast Sevens in Australia (25 November 2011).
My immediate thought was that maybe the players were showing off their ‘new underwear sponsor’ by holding their broeks up in front of their shorts. Not. Turns out that those ARE their playing shorts!
While the new jersey design looks great, we have to give a big thumbs-down to the y-front lookalike shorts. Definitely not Canterbury SA’s finest; that must rate right up there right down there with this faux pax by swimwear manufacturer TYR for the Singaporean waterpolo team:
