The International Rugby Board (IRB) today announced that the Australian-leg of the 2011/2012 HSBC Sevens World Series will move to Australia’s Gold Coast.
The decision was prompted by the great party atmosphere in other Series host-cities such as Wellington and Hong Kong. By moving it to one of Australia’s biggest tourist destinations, the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) hopes to rival the spectacle offered by its New Zealand and Chinese counterparts.
“The Gold Coast is known around the world as a city of excitement and fun and that is exactly the atmosphere we will want to create,” Australian Rugby Union chief John O’Neill said in a news release.
“We know events like Dubai, Hong Kong and Wellington all put on a show that attracts people from around the world and we are confident that the decision to host this tournament on the Gold Coast will deliver another exciting opportunity for fans to enjoy international sevens.”
The International Sevens Gold Coast will open the 2011/2012 HSBC Sevens World Series season on Nov. 25-26.
