This past weekend we found out about yet another exciting rugby tournament to add to next month’s Rugby Week.
Just to refresh your memory, in the run-up to the Cathay Pacific/Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens, rugby-lovers in Hong Kong and those visiting the SAR for the rugby, have a choice of the GFI Hong Kong Tens and the Kowloon Rugby Festival in the week leading up to the Sevens.
However, another (off-the-pitch) event has been added to the fun and excitement the weekend before the Sevens:
The Hong Kong Beach 5s.
Planned for the ample sandy beach of Repulse Bay, the tournament is an exciting up & coming shortened version of rugby that is becoming increasingly popular around the world. The field is a fraction of the size of a standard rugby pitch, far fewer players on each team, shorter matches and a simplified scoring system making this new competition fast paced, entertaining and action packed.
Like their website says:
Sun, sea, sand and rugby – Can’t get much better!
What we love about this innovative new format is the involvement of our friends over at Rugby Asia Channel. Guaranteed to bring their own particularly brand of excitement and innovation to the event, this video is just a taste of what rugby-lovers (and many startled commuters around Hong Kong) can expect:
