Ever since the announcement that Sevens Rugby has secured a place on the Olympic calendar, there has been a marked increase in both popular and corporate support for the game.
The IRB announced yesterday that “The World’s Local Bank” and certainly one of the largest, HSBC has come on board as the first ever title sponsor of the IRB Sevens World Series.
The ground-breaking five-year agreement sees the bank taking on the title naming rights to the record-breaking IRB sevens World Series, which comprises tournaments in Dubai, South Africa, New Zealand, USA, Australia, Hong Kong, England and Scotland. The Series will now be known as the:
However, due to a clash with another banking group, Credit Suisse, who owns the co-title rights to the Cathay Pacific Credit Suisse Hong Kong Sevens, The 2011 Hong Kong Sevens will not feature HSBC branding in year one of the HSBC Sevens World Series. Hong Kong will nevertheless remain within the overall Series points structure in 2010/11.
International Rugby Board President Bernard Lapasset said:
