Hugh Craig Everson is the physiotherapist with the Springbok Sevens Rugby Team.
Though his is one the faces almost always seen on the telly whenever the BlitzBokke play, Hugh Everson is one of those who mainly work behind the scenes.
On his feature “Sevens Questions” on PaulTreuSevens.com Guy McDonald jokes that team biokineticist Allan Temple-Jones “always tries to steal the coach’s TV time” However, Hugh get lots of TV-time because he is the member of the support staff designated to run on the pitch whenever the Boys have a break and need rehydration or when there’s a injury that needs to be attended to.
As team physiotherapist, in his own words, he is responsible for the overall well-being of the Springbok Sevens Team. This includes taking care of their medical conditioning, injuries as well as referring them to relevant medical specialists.
SAAHK Sevens Dinner 2008, Hong Kong (Pic: Mike Jansen)
On a personal note, the Missus and I had the honour of sharing a table with Hugh during the SA Association in Hong Kong’s (SAAHK) Sevens Dinner last year. I was pleased to hear that he hails from Kimberley, because he was able to tell me about the teachers training college in his hometown where my Mom qualified many years ago. He is a very approachable bloke and and “It was really enjoyable talking with him” says the Missus. Unfortunately, during the dinner, we had to shut up at times to listen to Bob Skinstad speak! I am proud to say that Hugh also qualified at my alma-mater, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in the Cape Town suburb of Bellville-South.
