Those of you who are on my friends-list on FaceBook may have noticed that I’m a stickler when it comes to repetitive words in South African sport, especially in SA rugby. I follow sports news reports and interviews on a daily basis and one word that would like to be banned from the SA rugby lexicon is:
AWESOME.
Ja, listen to any rugby player and count how many times the word ‘awesome’ is used. Come on Boys, surely there are many other more descriptive adjective (byvoeglike naamwoorde) that you can use. I’d like to get rugby agents to include in their array of client services, a course on:
“How to conduct an interview without using the word AWESOME”
I picked up the following snippet on zoopy.com where Springbok Wynand Olivier was “crowned” as the ‘Sexiest man of 2010.’
Listen to the interview towards the end of the clip (around 2:17 till the end) and count how many times the word AWESOME is used…
(If the SA gossip columnists are to be believed, Frans Steyn would approve of Wynand’s title and the skin shown in this clip!)
From the zoopy.com page:
Thirteen of South Africa’s sexiest men were featured in the ‘Cosmopolitan 2010 sexiest SA men calendar’, readers then voted during December/January and the overall winner was announced at a glitzy event held at The Venue in Melrose Arch on Thursday 28 January. Blue Bulls and Springbok centre, Wynand Olivier, won the readers vote and walked away with the title of SA’s sexiest man of 2010.
